What is Track day insurance?

Track day insurance is the accident coverage that is recommended when you drive your car around a racing circuit for an organised track driving experience. You can purchase track day insurance for your own personal vehicle so that you can feel confident that you are fully protected should an accident occur.

You can invest in one-day or multi-day track day insurance, depending on your personal needs, and it will cover you for the entire duration of your track day experience. Track day insurance is typically tailored to your needs and requirements and can be modified to create the perfect coverage.

Do I need insurance for a track day?

Track day insurance is not a compulsory purchase to take part in an organised track day event. However, it is certainly advised.

There are high risks involved in driving your car around a racing circuit, and even if you are competent and confident in your driving abilities, it doesn't mean that everyone on that track will be.

Typically, it is not standard to have track day insurance included in your regular car insurance policy; nevertheless, it is still worth checking. Remember that if it is included in your current car insurance plan and you need to make a claim following your track day experience, you will lose your no claims discount. For this reason, it is still advised to get specialist track day insurance coverage for this day event.

In addition to this, it is also worth noting that the track owner itself is not responsible for any damage caused to your car.

Insurance is peace of mind, and for activities like driving your car on a racing track, this peace of mind could potentially save you thousands of pounds.

What does track day insurance cover?

When it comes to track day insurance, our policies are all tailor-made so that you get the exact coverage you need. Speak with one of our expert insurance advisors today to get a quote and learn more about your options.

Typically track day insurance will cover all areas of your car that have been affected by an incident during your day at the racing track. You can specify how much coverage you want, as well as for how long. For example, do you need coverage to and from the racing track as well?

Typically you can choose a specific value to insure with track day insurance. This doesn't need to be the total value of your car as it would be for regular car insurance; instead, it can be against a specified amount.

We cover vehicles up to £300,000 for drivers between the ages of 25 and 69, and you do not need to have any previous track day experience in order to get insured with us. Alternatively, if you are a regular on the track and have modified your car for optimal performance, you can still trust A-Plan to provide high-quality insurance coverage.

Our flexible and reliable track day car insurance policies cover all of the large major and smaller regional tracks, from Oulton Park to Abingdon Airfield, so the venue possibilities are endless.

What does track day insurance not cover?

Our straightforward approach to insurance protection means that you can get covered for your track day instantly over the phone. We want to make sure that you have the best coverage for your needs; however, as standard, there are some aspects that track day insurance does not cover.

For example, whilst track day insurance will cover the costs for any areas of your car that have been affected by an incident on the track, it will not cover general wear and tear damage.

Wear and tear is to be expected when your drive your own car on a racing track. To learn more about this and learn how you can prevent damage to your car during your track day, check out our advice article here.

Track day insurance also does not include third-party liability insurance coverage. This means that if someone else accidentally hits your vehicle, it is still your responsibility to pay for the damages.

In addition to this, track day insurance only applies to non-competitive track day events.

How much does track day insurance cost?

The cost of your track day car insurance varies depending on different features. Typically, the type of car you drive, the number of track day events you've participated in, and previous track claims that you have made play a big part in deciding how much your track insurance coverage will cost.

Remember, your track day insurance is tailor-made for your individual needs and circumstances, and your expert insurance advisor will talk you through your options.

Modifications

If your car has been modified in any way to enhance your car's performance or cosmetic appeal, then your track insurance premium may be affected.

Cars that have been modified to increase performance are often more at risk of being in an accident. The modifications, for performance or cosmetic purposes, are also more likely to be costly to repair. To ensure that you are adequately protected, it is vital to state any car modifications when applying for your insurance coverage.

Can I cut the cost of track day insurance?

There is a range of different things to consider to help keep the cost down on your track day car insurance policy.

First things first, decide whether or not you want to get a single-day or multi-day policy. Depending on how frequently you drive at racing tracks, it could be much more cost-effective to have a multi-day insurance policy in place.

Secondly, discuss choosing an insurance policy with a higher excess. Typically, the higher the excess, the lower the premiums. Talk with one of our expert insurance advisors on whether this could be suitable for you.

Thirdly, before heading to the track, make sure that your car has had a full inspection by a trained mechanic. Not only will this reassure you that your vehicle can handle a day on the track being pushed to its limits, but it is also good for your insurance provider to know to help keep your insurance cost low.

Fourthly, get some experience. The more knowledge you have as a track day participant, the more likely you will get a reasonable price for your track day car insurance.

Can you get 1-day insurance?

Here at A-Plan, we offer 1-day insurance policies for your track day experience. You do not need to get stuck into any long-term commitment with our track day insurance policies. Instead, it is tailor-made to suit your needs.

So if you are a complete newbie and are just excited to try a new experience, we've got you covered. Similarly, if you are a seasoned professional and regularly spend your weekends at Thruxton or Anglesey, we can also offer multi-day coverage to better suit your requirements.

Are track days bad for your car?

Track day experiences come with a fair share of risk. Whilst taking out specific insurance can provide peace of mind for the day, there is still the question of whether or not track days are bad for your car?

When you push your car to the extreme, you can expect a certain level of wear and tear. However, this doesn't need to be anything to worry about. We advise that you check with a professional mechanic beforehand to ensure that your car is in a good enough condition to hit the racing ground.

For more information on this, as well as tips and tricks on how to better prepare and maintain your car for a day on the tracks, check out our advice article here.

Does insurance cover you on a race track?

It is unlikely that your standard motor insurance will cover you on a racing circuit. Nevertheless, it is always worth checking the fine print of your car insurance policy.

As mentioned above, if you do have track day insurance included in your standard motor insurance and you do need to make a claim, this will mean that you are no longer able to get your no claims discount.

Similarly, if it is included in your current car insurance, be sure to check the small print to make sure that it gives proper coverage so that you are not caught short.

Should I get track day insurance?

In a nutshell, yes, you should get track day insurance. Having insurance on your car, specifically for a track event, can prevent you from potentially paying for any damage directly out of pocket.

It is entirely at your own risk if you decide not to protect your car from accidents and other drivers. Even the most seasoned track driver can get into an accident. Remember, anyone can attend organised track day events; this means that all ability levels will be driving alongside you and your car.

Whilst no one wishes for an accident to occur, there are many different external factors that can increase the chances of an incident. For example, if you are new to the circuit and unfamiliar with the turns or even if the track is wet on the day you attend, it can be easy to get caught short.

Insurance is that protection that allows you to enjoy the day to the fullest, knowing that you are fully protected should anything happen.
